Welcome to top pots

Well autumn is here and the chilly early mornings are making us miss the hot weather, despite the copious watering! September/October is a busy time in the garden and here at Top Pots we have lots you may need to make reparation to your lawns, fill gaps in your borders and plant up your autumn/winter baskets to take you right through to Spring.

We have a large selection of bulbs for your baskets and borders including snowdrops, crocuses, daffodils, iris and hyacinth. We have large sacks of daffodils or Tete-a-tete’s where you can choose as many (or as few) as you like.

Thank you for all the customer requests. We are pleased to advise that our winter pansies and violas are now in full flower and ready for you to view and purchase. Adrian’s polytunnel of plants is looking spectacular and we would highly recommend you come and see it for yourselves. We can offer you violas and pansies in a wide range of colours and new this season, ‘Cool Wave’ trailing pansies. We also have a wide range of other plants to fill your baskets such as thymes, ajuga’s, calluna and maidenhair fern and much, much more.

If you would like us to plant your baskets for you, please call or pop in to Top Pots and our staff will be able to take the details of your requirements, likes and dislikes!

Many of you are now starting to give attention to your lawn grass which suffered so badly this summer. We have autumn grass care and everything you need to scarify, aerate, feed, patch and sow. For those of you who love your ornamental grasses, we have an excellent range to offer including Miscanthus sinensis, Pennisetum setaceum “Summer Samba”, “Rubrum” and “Fireworks” along with several varieties of Carex and Festuca to name but a few.

For the vegetable growers amongst you, we have Charlotte potatoes, garlic bulbs, winter onion sets and other winter veg. Perennials and shrubs: looking particularly resplendent at the moment and providing some lovely autumn colour are the cotoneasters and pyracantha – gorgeous yellow, orange and red berries which will also provide nourishment for your birds for years to come. If you are looking for colour, we have some lovely winter jasmines in stock as well as Jasmine x stephanense, a lovely two-tone pink, spring flowering variety. Caryopteris, hardy plumbago, lavender and lobelia are providing a splash of blue whilst penstemons and hostas are delivering pink and purple to your palette.

For those of you still lighting the BBQ, we are pleased to be able to offer restaurant grade “Big K” charcoal. This burns for longer and hotter than regular grade charcoal. We look forward to seeing you at Top Pots soon.

Opening hours: Monday to Friday 8.30am-5.00pm, Saturday 9.00am-5.00pm, Sunday 10.00am-4.00pm

Top Pots Garden Centre at  the Westmill Farm leisure complex is situated on the A602 just north of Ware in Hertfordshire. It incorporates its own nursery plus a full landscaping section within the site. We first established the nursery in 1991 for plant and hanging basket production after being approached by our local Hertfordshire brewers to restart making hanging baskets after the sale of another garden centre that we were involved in and where we supplied them from before. It is a family run business employing 12 staff (both full and part time) and jointly run by brothers Peter and Cris who have both been involved in agriculture and horticulture all their lives. Together with Adrian, our nursery manager, and the two partners we can supply expert advice to all our customers.

As the demand for our hanging baskets increased in Hertfordshire and nationally so the nursery grew to what is now its present size. It now supplies the Garden Centre with the bulk of the plants on sale, plus the hanging baskets for our display contracts and private customers. Also we wholesale to other garden centres, landscapers and wholesale nurseries.
